More environmentally
and sustainble

Tarzan-Diving is committed to becoming more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Raja Ampat, renowned for its stunning and pristine coral reefs, is facing challenges that threaten its delicate ecosystem. You can play a vital role in protecting "The Last Paradise."

We donate from every dive you are doing with Tarzan-Diving 20.000 IDR for our project providing 100% biodegradable products and bio septic tanks to surrounding local homestays.
And 20.000 IDR per dive goes to Child Aid Papua. A non-profit organization, working exclusively in Raja Ampat. Giving access to high quality of education and knowledge for a lifetime of learning and empowerment with long term protection of the natural world around them.
There is no protection without educating and involving the local people. Child aid Papua teaches exactly what is needed in the region. Jonas, Maya and their team are doing an amazing job and deserve all support.

Coral reefs, often referred to as marine rainforests, are among the oldest ecosystems on earth, providing habitat for a quarter of all marine life and plants. They also serve as natural barriers, protecting coastlines from erosion and storms.

The more corals we have, the better our oceans will thrive. You can make a difference by helping to replant broken coral fragments and give them a new lease on life.

Join the coral restoration program at Tarzan-Diving and be part of this vital effort!

To protect the sensitive environment of Raja Ampat, coral planting alone isn't enough. We must also address the root causes of coral bleaching. In addition to climate change, rising water temperatures, ocean acidification from CO2, and overfishing, the impact of increasing tourism poses significant challenges to the ecosystem.

Here are the main issues we face:

  • Damaged corals from improper buoyancy control

  • Plastic pollution

  • Water contamination from sunscreens, shampoos, soaps, and other chemicals, along with nutrient overload from inadequate wastewater management and organic waste

  • Lack of education among local communities

By tackling these problems together, we can help safeguard this precious environment.

Solutions

Be mindful of your buoyancy control while diving. Our team is always here to help you improve your buoyancy skills. This is a top priority in all our PADI courses. You can also join our Skill Refresh or Peak Performance Buoyancy courses to enhance your abilities.

If you’re inexperienced, please refrain from using cameras, as it can be easy to lose focus on your buoyancy while trying to capture photos or videos. Our crew is more than happy to take a few pictures for you if conditions permit.

At Tarzan-Diving, we adhere to strict guidelines: do not touch, chase, or disturb any marine life! We also do not allow the use of gloves.

Avoid single used plastic

Please avoid using single-use plastics, as there is no waste or recycling system in Raja Ampat. It’s crucial for the environment to leave no trash on the islands, especially electronic waste and batteries.

Use reef-friendly sunscreen

Please opt for mineral-based sunscreen or wear long rash guards while diving and snorkeling. Chemicals like oxybenzone found in some sunscreens can harm and sterilize corals and marine life.

Always check the ingredients—many sunscreens claim to be reef-friendly but still contain toxic components.

At Tarzan-Diving, we offer small amounts of zinc-based sunscreen in our shop. Many people are unaware of the negative impact of certain products, so we take the time to educate our guests and provide alternatives.

Please note: divers who do not use mineral-based sunscreen will not be permitted to join the dive. We also sell long rash guards in our shop, which can help prevent sunburn without the need for any products.

Choose biodegradable products

Raja Ampat lacks a wastewater management system, meaning all waste is released unfiltered into the ground and ocean. Please opt for 100% biodegradable products to minimize your impact.

In our dive shop, you'll find a variety of eco-friendly soaps, shampoos, creams, and conditioners. By choosing these products, you also support the local community through Raja Ampat Naturale, crafted by local women.

Educating and Empowering Local Homestays

Tarzan-Diving is committed to using only biodegradable products, including detergents, shampoos, and dishwashing liquids, and we provide these for our entire crew. However, this is not enough! With the rise in tourism, local communities are increasingly turning to toxic products. Biodegradable options are not readily available in Raja Ampat, and many locals lack awareness of the harmful impacts of their choices. Education is crucial.

Our Project: We aim to provide education and biodegradable products to nearby homestays.

How You Can Help:
There’s a donation box at Tarzan-Diving specifically for biodegradable products. Your contributions will allow us to purchase these items for local homestays and teach them how to use them effectively and understand their importance.

Please join us in protecting the delicate environment of Raja Ampat, "The Last Paradise."

Reduce Nutrients in the Ocean

Nutrients from leftover food can negatively impact coral reefs by disrupting the ecosystem balance. This excess nutrient load promotes algae growth and increases the risk of crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, which can devastate coral reefs.

Traditionally, locals have thrown leftover food into the ocean to avoid attracting rats, flies, and other pests. However, a better solution is to create a compost heap using soldier flies. These unique flies, which don’t have mouths, have larvae that are incredibly efficient at composting leftover food.

At Tarzan-Diving, we are already implementing this system, and we hope to expand it to nearby homestays as well.

Reduce Groundwater Contamination

To minimize groundwater contamination and the influx of nutrients from waste, Tarzan-Diving utilizes bio-septic tanks. In these systems, solids settle at the bottom, and bacteria break them down into liquid waste, which then flows into a drain field where plants can absorb the nutrients.

Tarzan-Diving also supplies bio-septic tanks to our partner homestays, Tau Yado Guesthouse and Papuani Homestay.

The Projekt: providing more bio-septic Tanks for local homestays.
